About Us

About us

We are in mission to help people in needs.

Aasra Welfare Association (AWA) is a not-for-profit organization founded in the year 2015, with the primary objective to uplift the lives of waste-pickers and restore dignity and identity to their livelihood. With the help of waste-pickers’ strength and unity, Aasra Welfare Association has taken up flagship projects of developing and operating waste management facilities in an environment friendly and sustainable manner. These waste management centers are state-of-the-art material recovery facilities, strategically developed taking into consideration the necessities and essentials for waste-pickers (safai sathis), ensuring their safety and security. Established in the year 2015, AWA has undertaken several initiatives in the field of recycling, waste management, health and sanitation, education for Safai Sathis’ children, cleanliness drives, women empowerment, leadership development of Safai Sathis and financial inclusion activities such as SHG formation, to name a few.

Aasra Welfare Association has been instrumental in spreading awareness on saving the environment by following the 5R principle: Refuse – Reduce – Reuse – Repurpose – Recycle. The various Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities conducted by Aasra Welfare Association in collaboration with its partner agencies/donor partners plays a crucial role in inculcating a positive behaviour change among citizens, laying a foundation for the success of the Swachh Bharat Mission. Aasra Welfare Association provides dry waste management solutions as well as advocates for the welfare of waste-pickers.

Our Mission

  • Assisting urban local bodies and Nagar Panchayats in effectively managing waste, while eliminating the degrading practice of waste scavenging by creating formal employment opportunities, and providing access to healthcare, education, and skill development programs.
  • We aim to enhance the overall economic and social well-being of waste pickers, offering them dignity and recognition for their work. Our goal is to drive behavioral change towards sustainable waste management practices and encourage environmentally conscious alternatives.
  • Furthermore, we seek to promote the 5R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, and Refuse), supporting the transition to a circular economy.
Capacity building program

Children and youth are the essence of the community,

• We organize child-friendly workshops where we help the children enjoy their childhood through different activities like games, quizzes, competitions, dance workshops, storytelling, moral teachings, etc. With the involvement of the celebrity, children get good motivation and a boost to their capacity.

• During these sessions we educate them about their basic rights and also about their responsibilities towards their family and the community.
